Leland Township Library Chromebook Use Procedures
By reading these procedures, and continuing to the use of these computers, you have agreed to abide by them:
1.You must check out the Chromebook using your Patron card and having it put onto your account as a check out, or by leaving your driver’s license at the Circulation Desk. Your driver’s license will be returned when the Chromebook is returned.
2.Usage time is determined by demand for the devices. If all devices are checked out and there are people waiting to use a device usage will be limited to one hour with the person having the device the longest being asked by staff to relinquish it so another may use it.
3. Printing costs for are 20 cents per page for black and white, and 50 cents per page for color, to be paid at the circulation desk.
4. You may not install or download software or save files on library computers. All files must be saved to a online account or your own device.
5. Library computers may only be used for legal purposes. Examples of unacceptable purposes include, but are not limited to:
Harassment of other users or Library Staff
Libeling or slandering other users
Destruction or damage to equipment, software or data belonging to the Library or other users
Disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications
Unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material
Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification information regarding minors.
6. The Library does not monitor and has no control over the information available on the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Parents are advised to supervise their children’s Internet sessions. Library staff and volunteers are not responsible for Internet information selected and/or accessed by children.
7.In response to concerns about these types of resources, Section 6 of the Michigan Library privacy act, 1982 PA 455, MCL 397.606 requires public libraries to either filter all public internet computers or to adopt and implement policies that prevent minors (under 18 years of age) from accessing sexually explicit materials on the internet. Section 6 also applies to the public the public wireless networks.
To comply with that law, the Library establishes the following acceptable use policy: Viewing of explicit materials by minors is prohibited. Individuals are reminded that Chromebooks are being used in a public area, which is shared by patrons and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, and are asked to be sensitive to this when accessing information and images. Staff may prohibit the display of such material that would reasonably be considered inappropriate for viewing in a public area. To assure compliance with this law and policy, Library staff will visually monitor use of all computers within the Library. Violations to this policy will result in immediate termination of use of Library Internet service and/or computers, based on a decision to be made by Library Staff. A second violation by the same patron(s) will result in permanent suspension of Library Internet service use. In the case of a minor in violation, the Library Staff will attempt to inform parents of the violation and resulting consequences.
