LEARNING OBJECTIVES

#1 Your Lens On Disability: At this first conversation we’ll set our gathering agreements, begin to build relationships, introduce the learning arc for this series, explore our individual lens on disability, and learn from a disability activist.

#2 Grounding In History: This second conversation will dive into our complicated past with disability including poor laws, institutionalization, “ugly laws”, eugenics, and the object of normality and we’ll explore how these have shaped our attitudes and our community spaces.

#3 Activism, Resistance, and Resilience: In conversation three we’ll explore major events in the Disability Rights Movement, celebrate the disabled leaders that led the way, challenged the societal view of people with disabilities, and pushed the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

#4 Disability Justice: Our fourth conversation will explore our shared language, disability etiquette, the characteristics of an ableist culture and its antidotes, the future of accessibility, and celebrate disability culture.

#5 Building Ally Culture & Community: In the final conversation of this series we’ll explore what allyship looks like, identify concrete actions we can take, explore opportunities for continued education, celebrate and uplift the disabled community, and take the Disability Solidarity Pledge.

  • These Community Conversations are intended to be a progressive educational experience with each conversation building upon the last and leading into the next. Please plan to attend all — or as many as you can!

  • If you will be attending for continuing education credits - learning objectives and proof of attendance will be provided.

  • Refreshments will be served!  Call the library to RSVP, for more information and/or to request an accommodation.
